July 20, 2004: DDTF Technology tracking Elephants in Africa With support from NASA and the help of the Federation for Earth Science, the DDTF is creating a new tool to help natural resource managers in five Central African countries track how elephants range. Using remotely sensed data from the Global Land Cover Facility at the University of Maryland, the DDTF will create a data-rich user application that shows how annual and seasonal variation in vegetation and other factors are related to the movement of elephants. Real-time data will be available to managers for the first time. The DDTF is also building a multi-lingual authoring capability to handle the translation of the user interface into French. All code and data resources will be available through the NSDL for reuse. This application will be complete by December 2004. |
